I left my heart in Santorini...
Here I sit, with a cup of coffee in my hand. There's no one in this cafe, which stands above the cliff in this most famous Cyclades town. A calm brilliant dark blue Aegean sea stretches no matter where I look. The signature white washed house with blue dome clustered in this paradise. The Greek called this place Thera. We know it as… Santorini.
Below me, there's a couple in their wedding dress smile happily for their wedding photos with the background of famous blue-dome church. I can see the way the groom stare at his bride was so full of love, as if saying "how lucky I am to be here with you". "I will do that too", I promised to myself.
Restaurant is full of couples holding hands, having a chat while drinking wine. Kids laughing happily eating their ice cream. While boats sail into seemingly never ending blue sea. Everyone enjoy their time. No wonder this island is famous as the most romantic place on earth.
As time passed by, thousand of people start coming to the cliff with sole purpose, to see the most breathtaking sunset. Sitting beside me, was a middle age couple speaking in French. "Bonsoir", I greeted them who looks surprise. They live in Paris, close to my campus. They invited me to join to their table and we had a nice chat. It was their 25th wedding anniversary, and quarter century ago, they were here for honeymoon. I offered them to take a photo while they're kissing with the sea and the sun as background. "Merci beaucoup cherie" said the lady as she touched gently her husband cheek. And he smiled. I'm jealous of them.
Far in horizon, the sun start to descends, creating orange shades and red fill the sky. Everyone just stand still, as if time freeze. The cliff starts to glow into warm golden color created by sun rays. Everyone stop, mesmerized by the beauty. Some couple kissing, some can't stop taking photos, but most people are just stunned as the giant orange ball slowly disappeared, sunken into dark blue Aegean sea. The sea transforms into multiple shades of blue and orange that blends perfectly with the white walls of Santorini's house, creating unforgettable moment that make you hold your breath.
I was hypnotized as well. Never in my life I see the sun sets that beautifully. I didn't realize how long time had passed as my coffee now getting cold. I thank God for giving me the opportunity to see His magical masterpiece. I saw this place countless time in postcard; I heard people talking about how marvelous this paradise that make my heart ache every time I hear it. But now here I am, seeing it with my own eyes.
But deep down inside, my heart hurts. If... If only I can be here with someone special, someone to share this magical moment together. Someone who I can hold her hands while we both stare to horizon as the sun slowly disappear in this heavenly island… Santorini.
